Sustainability

How We Plan

Our Sustainability Goals

A common definition is providing for our needs without hindering the ability of future generations to provide for their own needs. In the context of landscaping, two ancient proverbs come to mind:

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best time is now”

“A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they will never rest.”

LAWN & LINTEL is here for the long term and is committed to building a sustainable future using methods and processes which ensure that our landscaping is sustainable. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a useful framework to capture a few of the ways in which we actively adhere to best practices for sustainability in this industry.

SDG3 Good Health & Well-Being

At LAWN & LINTEL, we believe in safety first and ensure we exercise a judicious hierarchy of controls starting with safe situations, safe practices and safety protection (Elimination, Substitution, Isolation, Engineering, Administrative/Safe Work Practices, and finally Personal Protective Equipment as the final line of defense).

We ensure that the safety of our team, clients, vendors, and anyone impacted by our actions is guarded with the highest importance.

Risky behaviour is not tolerated.

Each of our team members has a national police clearance, mandatory drug test, white card, first aid training, and robust safety training and is issued full PPE with any safety tickets for applicable work if required as good health and wellbeing is key at LAWN & LINTEL.

We believe in and uphold a good work culture where our team enjoys delivering quality work in a safe environment.

SDG4 Quality Education

We believe that best practice starts with best information and ensure that all our staff receive adequate and robust training. Each team member receives personalized on the job training coached and mentored by our technical officers after going through over 20 Safe Operating Procedures outlining key tasks which we do. Our staff include extremely talented personnel with diverse qualification backgrounds leading to a depth of knowledge to draw from including engineering, management, law, biomedical sciences, psychology, finance, business, and landscape architecture.
We encourage continuous learning within the team and aim to create a landscaping company with the smartest processes and professional delivery to be found nationally.

SDG6 Clean Water & Sanitation

LAWN & LINTEL is mindful of the water needs and restrictions we face in Western Australia where every drop of drinkable water saved counts.

We promote the use of native plants where possible and utilize waterwise reticulation systems.

We believe in a “as needed” approach to soil improvement and reticulation and focus on improving soil and reticulating only where required so as to minimize watering requirements. Direct to root or dewline reticulation is used where possible and watering times are mindfully selected to avoid unnecessary evaporation.

The improvement of soil with conditions such as mineral magic is used to increase the ability of the soil profile to hold water and thus reduce watering requirements.

SDG7 Affordable & Clean Energy

As far as is practicable we utilize clean forms of energy such as battery powered tools and seek to reduce energy consumption. We realize that some equipment still requires to use petrol or diesel to run, but where possible we use tools with electricity to reduce direct fume and noise emissions around our client work sites and also reduce emissions as much as we can.

SDG8 Decent Work & Economic Growth

At LAWN & LINTEL, we strive to continuously improve to make the business a work place of choice attracting top talent in WA and beyond. We are proud of the work that we do and want to operate in ways that prioritize principles and people which should lead to profit that we will not have compromised our values to achieve.

We want to provide value to our clients with healthy remuneration for the top level services provided by our team ensuring that our business can be sustained for the long run too. We aren’t a charity by any means although we are very generous with our clients and committed to achieving amazing results for our stakeholders.

SDG12 Responsible Consumption & Production

As a service based business we ensure that any products we purchase are responsibly sourced and estimated to avoid wastage.

We are very careful with our quotes to avoid excessive waste. We are also mindful of the implications of our landscaping to the environment and will not recommend certain landscaping elements which we feel will adversely affect the microclimate of your property.

SDG15 Life on Land

Our business is essentially tied to the design and creation of new landscapes where we select the best plants to suit your area and needs. We plant hundreds of plants and trees a year and install hundreds of square metres of lawn, highlighting the benefit of an organic solution versus artificial finishing.

While we install hardscapes, we strongly recommend our clients to have the majority of their outdoor spaces dedicated to softscaping with a diverse collection of plants, flowering plants, natives, trees, and grasses to reduce the heat and glare around the house (further reducing the need for airconditioning and associated energy costs) and encouraging biodiversity with pollinators and homes for insects and birds.

We are extremely proud that our landscaping directly increases carbon sequestration in the suburbs helping to keep carbon dioxide levels lower, houses cooler, and reducing the heat reflection to the atmosphere while providing oxygen through photosynthesis.

SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals

We enjoy working with likeminded businesses and collaborating with others who share our values. We are keen to hear from you if you are interested to work together with us to forge a path of excellence in the landscaping industry and provide avenues for us to create sustainable and beautiful outdoor spaces for the people of Western Australia and beyond.
